1 _ FPSO’s,

Drilling, Topsides, be they for FPSO, s or Platforms are built in packages to enable them to be built up in a unitized manner, usually demanded by the location of final assembly. i.e. we unitize the packages e.g. Gas turbine generator at the specialist manufacturer and transport for sea side or offshore assembly to be built up in building block fashion into a complete installation. A major problem is the method of support for objects which demand a stable foundation not conditioned by the object on which they are mounted. This section uses the FPSO as the area of assembly and then describes various packages which might be mounted on a hull.

2 _ System and System Definition

Systems are essential in Package Engineering as they help delineate primarily in process terms but also physical definition the boundaries and extent of the equipment and at the same time show the part they pay in the total installation.

3 _ Combustion

This is a process that allows the conversion of combustible elements into energy; it is also a subject which lends itself to packaging. Often it is a process in itself within a process train and has clear physical definition i.e. a boiler with support ancillaries such as fans, pumps etc. The photograph of a model of a boiler and the system description diagram capture the extent of such packages. Combustion is a process which allows the production of usable heat (steam, hot water) and the conversion of noxious fuels into an exhaust that although having unattractive properties/components does not represent the same potential for contamination prior to combustion.

4 _ Package Diagrams and Data

These promote the physical definition of equipment which in turn assists package definition by providing units of size to input building block fashion the make up packages.  Packages to be described need to be defined in both written description and visually.  The written description can be in various forms of specification, e.g. descriptive, abbreviated. Visually the most common is a diagram contained in a data sheet which may also contain written data, drawings etc.  Typical examples of them are given

5 _ FEED, Front End Engineering Design Study

This section shows how subjects for packaging can initially be recognized in the initial project definition in the Front End Study usually referred to as a FEED. It is the definition of these by the buttoned subjects that promote more detailed definition.  FEED is a broad description and covers whatever the project participants wish to study prior to detail engineering.  Its purpose is to provide a skeleton on which the body of the a Project can be hung, it is used to define major objectives, outline content, costs, timing, codes of practice eg ISO 9001, HAZOP, HAZID etc. Long Lead Items such as Packages may be studied in detail.

6 _ Material Handling, Mechanical Handling

Any Item, Package, Module, Product etc must be incorporated in a Process, Facility, Location.  To do this it is essential to have suitable Handling Equipment, Proceedures, Practises which allow this to be undertaken.

Information

A good place to pick up information on Package Engineering are the major Offshore Engineering Exhibitions, 2 of note are:- O.T.C. The Offshore Technology Conference (& Exhibition) held in Houston USA in the Spring and O.N.S. Offshore North Seas, held alternatively in Aberdeen Scotland and Stavanger Norway (this year) in the autumn.  Information on these can be found on:-
